Wood Care
1 What is pressure treated wood?
Pressure treated wood is wood that has been placed in a cylindrical tank and pressure impregnated with an effective preservative which helps the wood resist attack from decay causing fungi and insects. Although this will give protection against rotting and insect attack, a small amount of maintenance from time to time will give maximum protection against fading and weathering to keep your fencing looking good for years to come.
2 How do I protect my Funky Fence Panels from rain and moisture?
Because timber is a natural material which absorbs moisture from the surrounding air, wood has a tendency to expand when wet and shrink when dry, which can lead to cracking during the summer months. However, we would advise you against using wood fillers on your fences because the timber will tend to swell over the winter months and the cracks will close. To minimise this process, a wood sealant should be applied - ideally one which contains a water repellent solution. This will significantly reduce the rate at which moisture is absorbed and released.
3 How can I prevent my Funky Fence Panels from fading?
Ultraviolet rays from the sun are the main reason for the discolouration of timber. Therefore the sealant should also contain a good UV inhibitor to slow down the effects of this process. Clear sealants will provide some protection to your fencing, although fading will occur more rapidly than those sealants which contain a colour pigment.
You can help prevent your wooden fence panels and garden furniture from fading to a dry, grey colour by reapplying your sealant on a regular basis. For frequency of applications, please refer to the instructions on the sealant container.
Note:
When using sealants, you should always follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully.
Useful Tip
To achieve a smooth, professional finish, power-wash your wooden fence panels to remove any dirt or grit before applying any sealants or paints.
